On Career Crises

Change begins when the fear of not acting at all at last outstrips the paralysing fear of making a mistake.

On Career Crises | The Book of Life

In 1700, in Western Europe, there were some 400 different kinds of jobs you could choose from. Nowadays, there are approximately 500,000. No wonder if we sometimes have a bit of trouble settling on what we might want to do.
It is only in very recent history that we’ve even attempted not just to make money at work, but also – extraordinarily – to be happy there as well.
Our career crises are aggravated by the sense that our talents aren’t real unless
a) they make us money
b) we mine them full time
c) they aren’t just hobbies.
Such dogmas are, at the very least, open to question.
Many of us are still trapped within the career-cage unwittingly created for us by some  hasty ignorant choices made by our unknowing 18-year-old selves.
What we want above all is meaningful work – which means in essence: work that either alleviates the suffering or increases the pleasure of other people.
When work feels meaningful, you’d be ready to lay your life down for it in return for a salary roughly equivalent to the minimum wage.
Slowly assemble a portrait of your ideal occupation through an analysis of your envious emotions. Keep an Envy Diary.
People don’t tend to leave jobs because of the pay or even the office politics. They leave when they are no longer learning.
True success might mean, by 50, having returned in key ways to what it was fun to do at five.
Serfdom had ended in Western Europe by the early 15th century. But it continues as a psychological category in our unconscious. Such things can take a few millenia to work themselves through.
There are at least five utterly plausible working selves within each of us. We are multiple selves in vain search of singular identities.
That you haven’t yet found your vocation is no indication that you will never discover it. Even if you are currently seventy-three.
It’s entirely acceptable to have wasted so much time.
Spread a consoling spirit by learning to ask at parties, with gentle melancholy, not ‘what do you do?’ but ‘what do you wish you might have done?’

FOOD FOR THOUGHT (tasks to do if you want ;-)

  • Write down 10 jobs that your acquaintances from university are pursuing that you yourself definitely have no interest in. List the reasons why. Start to understand the particularities of your working identity.
  • Keep a record of everyone you meet whose job makes you envious.
  • Reflect on 10 occupations that might have been plausible but were (psychologically) off the table back home.
  • Make a map of how you have got to where you are now in the shape of a river; show tributaries feeding the main current and dams where things got blocked or failed.
  • What job is the person doing whom you would most like to see fail? There are clues here.
  • Make a list of your fears in relation to work, among them: I won’t earn enough; I will be ridiculed; I will disappoint X; I will be bored; I won’t make a contribution to society; I won’t properly mine my talents. Give each a seriousness score from 1-10.
  • Which of these are you – in the end – best at: numbers, words, images, people?
  • Not having a plan quickly puts us at the mercy of those who have one.
  • To create; To help; To serve; To teach; To design; To build; To earn; Give a score out of 10 to each.
  • Email seven friends and tell them you are taking part in an experiment which forces you to ask them what five jobs they believe you might be suited to other than the one you’re currently pursuing.
  • Every successful business is at heart an attempt to solve someone’s problem: what are – for  you – mankind’s most interesting problems?

Play or die: the musical chairs of tech

We understand that today’s startups are engaged in a game of musical chairs, and we design our strategy to retain a chair for our entrepreneurs to dominate new markets. The unique formula for a winning company rests on four pillars: unit profitability, restrained burn rates, capital stability, and contingency planning.
1. Unit Profitability
Being able to achieve product market fit and positive return on sales, without massive amounts of capital, is highly predictive of success and the best inoculation against capital “bubbles”.
2. Restrained Burn Rates
This isn’t to say that companies should be undercapitalized, but scarcity and respect for capital do drive innovative thinking and focus. Both are keys to success at any point in the cycle.
3. Capital Stability
We believe the best foundation is a syndicate of two institutional investors possessing the dry powder and conviction to support initial growth and the credibility to attract high-quality growth investors when it’s time to pour on the gas.
4. Contingency Planning
Even in buoyant times, a precautionary assessment of the unexpected remains valuable. For example, if you’re expanding nationally while still trying to prove product market fit or still seeking solid unit economics. In this instance, your burn is likely very high, making your reliance on attracting additional capital more absolute, and potentially more difficult.

While unit economics, lean startup philosophies, capital stability and precautions are unsexy, it is critical for startups to ensure that they are supported by all four pillars when the inevitable cycles of the market turn. After all, to win at musical chairs, you need a firm seat.

Big Data vs. Thick Data?

Combining the two approaches can solve many of the problems that each category of data faces on its own.

Big Data Is Only Half the Data Marketers Need - Harvard Business Review

Thick data’s strength comes from its ability to establish hypotheses about why people behave as they do. It cannot help answer questions of “how much,” only “why.” Big Data has the advantage of being largely unassailable because it is generated by the entire customer population rather than a smaller sample size. But it can only quantify human behavior, it cannot explain its motivations. That is to say, it cannot arrive at a “why.”
Left even more uncertain than before the survey, the CMO decided to commission a study to come up with thicker data: he wanted insights from spending time with consumers in their homes and daily lives.
a major shift in consumers lives was apparent. Not only had their food habits changed, but people’s whole social lives were different. Stable family routines were dissolving, and predicting what next week would look like was increasingly difficult.
…the experiences that the company’s stores offered were out of sync with the reality of the consumers. Instead of focusing on lowering prices, the supermarkets future strategy was built on a different idea: building distinctive shopping experiences that fit into customers’ fragmented lives.
The big data alarmed the CMO, prompting the exploration of why the numbers were changing. The thick data afforded the needed insights to understand what bigger shifts were behind the numbers, and provided the renewed take on what kind of business the retailer was in.…
Melding big and thick data together isn’t easy. It requires changing practices, hiring new people, and allocating funds away from familiar ways of doing things. But once you’ve seen the power of real data, you’ll question the millions of dollars wasted on surveys and focus groups.

How Apple Is Giving Design A Bad Name

Design is a way of thinking, of determining people’s true, underlying needs, and then delivering products and services that help them. Design combines an understanding of people, technology, society, and business. The production of beautiful objects is only one small component of modern design: Designers today work on such problems as the design of cities, of transportation systems, of health care. Apple is reinforcing the old, discredited idea that the designer’s sole job is to make things beautiful, even at the expense of providing the right functions, aiding understandability, and ensuring ease of use.
How Apple Is Giving Design A Bad Name – Fast Co. Design

Good design should be attractive, pleasurable, and wonderful to use. But the wonderfulness of use requires that the device be understandable and forgiving. It must follow the basic psychological principles that give rise to a feeling of understanding, of control, of pleasure. These include discoverability, feedback, proper mapping, appropriate use of constraints, and, of course, the power to undo one’s operations. These are all principles we teach elementary students of interaction design.

…programmers rush to code without understanding the people who will use the products. Designers focus entirely on making it all look pretty. And executives get rid of user experience teams who want to help design the products properly and ensure the products are made usable during the design phase, not after manufacturing, coding, and release, when it is too late. These uninformed company executives assume all this up-front design research, prototyping, and testing clearly must slow down the development process. Nope. When done properly, it speeds things up by catching problems early, before coding even begins.
The result of avoiding proper design methodology? Higher costs for service lines, for help. And the eventual defection of unhappy customers who may publicly still sing the praises of Apple’s simple interface while forking over the money for a different brand phone that they hope they’ll be smart enough to actually be able to use.

Di no a:
Las tandas.
- Prestar dinero.

On charm

charm is a technique, neither sinister nor moral in itself, that can be used for good or ill and whose ultimate value depends on the purpose to which it is being applied…
On Charm | The Book of Life

…the world would be well served if the mechanics of charm were studied with particular energy by those with the best ends in mind. What, then, are some of the leading constituents of charm?

  • Familiarity
  • Warmth
  • Equality
  • Unshockability
  • Curiosity

Being charming isn’t simply a nice optional extra. It’s central to dealing effectively with practical problems. We’re so often held up by difficulties with other people, who we struggle to persuade, motivate and get on side. Charm is a major mechanism for having an impact. The more important and worthwhile our objectives the more important it is to be able to deploy charm to further them.
